Volume, Capacity and Measuring

Next week in maths we are going to be learning about measuring.
We will be working outside in the playground measuring with metre sticks, trundle wheels and tape measures.

We will be working inside measuring volume and capacity with a range of standard and non-standard containers.

We will also be weighing objects using scales and recording the weight of them to compare.

To be able to measure accurately, we need to understand how to read various scales and units of measure. This will be the focus of our activities this week.

Here are some games you can try to get your brain working....

Math Snow Day Games...The spinners!

Here is the link to the website with the spinners we have been using in maths... click on the image below...

Start by choosing 2 spinners and then set your value (in class we used any of the top 5 depending what you feel most confident with) and then spin them and decide what operation you will use in the middle and work out your answer before revealing it!! (Remember you will only be able to do suntraction if the first number is bigger than the second). Have fun!!! Let me know what equations you come up with!!

Pirate Co-ordinates!!!

This week in maths we have been learning about co-ordinates and we were fab at reading co-ordinate grids so we started to link co-ordinates into direction. We made our own pirate co-ordinate maps and tested our partners to see if they could identify the different features, and we all challenged each other with our giant co-ordinate grid.

You can try these co-ordinate games at home on the computer...

This one is a little tricky, place the red dot for each insect on the correct co-ordinate clicking HERE

Catch the fly by identifying the co-ordinate HERE

Practical Maths Problems!!

In maths at the moment we are working on our underlying maths skills to solve practical maths problems. This mean we are solving a range of word problems by deciding whether we need to use addition, subtraction, multiplication or division skills, and then what do we need to do with the numbers to work out the answer?

We have been trying these skills with soldiers from the Crimean War this week!!

Have a go at this one...

If there are 8 soldiers in the Scutari hospital and each of them need 2 bandages, how many bandages would Florence need all together?

and this one...

If there are 15 soldiers in the hospital and 4 get better and go back out to the war, and 5 more go home, how many are left?

What about this tricky one....?

There are 26 soldiers in the hospital laying in beds, and 33 soldiers sat on chairs,, how many soldiers altogether? (You may need to use partitioning and a blank number line for this)

Here are a few of us tackling some problems in class...
