Visual Literacy: Silent Blue Book

This week in literacy we have been using our inference skills to pick apart a visual text called 'The Silent Blue Book' by Maia Walczak. There was no talking on the text, just music and we were working together to decide what we thought the story was about, what the author was trying to portray and how we felt about the text. Some of us found it so emotional it brought a few tears!! Here we are sharing ideas, listening to each other and writing our views.

Visual Literacy 'The Silent Blue Book'

Next week in literacy, we are going to be extending our pirate topic further and reading 'The Spell Shell'  by Roderick Hunt and then developing our interpreting skills by looking at 'The Silent Blue Book' by Maia Walczak. It is a piece of text with no words and we are going to be deciding what we think is happening to the character, her feelings, where she goes and why and what is the relevance of the fox.

You can watch it here....

This video is taken from http://www.literacyshed.com/the-maia-walczak-shed.html feel free to look at the authors other texts.

A surprise for us!!

This morning when we came into class, we had a surprise package. We passed it round the circle and guessed what we thought it might be, some people thought it was sugar, some thought it was a map and some thought it was empty!!

When Jack opened it for us we found a message in a bottle from a pirate!!

We read it carefully and found out the pirate had sent it from a ship on the Atlantic Ocean and his ship had been invaded by sneaky pirates trying to steal their treasure!! Can you remember what he said he had been busy doing? This week in literacy we are writing replies......What would you write if you were putting a message in a bottle?

George's Marvellous Medicine!

In literacy we are currently developing our instructional text writing skills and this week we are writing instructions to make our own marvellous medicine, following on from reading Roald Dahl's classic, 'George's Marvellous Medicine'.

You can listen to an audio version of the story here...

Can you think of a set of instructions to make your own marvellous medicine? What ingredients would you put into into it?

Can you describe this potion using your VCOP skills?
